Crawley’s next challenge comes against Paul Cook’s Chesterfield when the Reds entertain the Spireites at the Broadfield Stadium tomorrow afternoon.
Crawley took a point from their encounter with MK Dons on Tuesday evening with the match resulting in a 0-0 stalemate. Manager Scott Lindsey summarised by saying that it was a “solid point against a really good team.”
Their attention turns to Chesterfield at home with games approaching thick and fast as the Reds enter the business end of the season. The Spireites currently sit in sixth on 52 points as they look to achieve promotion after narrowly missing out last season when they lost 4-1 on aggregate to Walsall in the playoff semi-final.
Crawley, on the other hand, are fighting a different cause, at the bottom of the table as they look to retain their League Two status.
After a run of bad results the Reds currently sit in 21st and two points clear of the relegation zone.
The Crawley boss exclaimed that “they don’t come any easier, do they? You play MK Dons away and now we’re playing Chesterfield at home.”
Lindsey referred to the previous meeting between the two sides where it finished 2-2 saying that his side “could have come away with all three points” after former Red Kaheim Dixon missed a great chance when he found himself in a 1v1 with Chesterfield’s keeper, following Harry McKirdy’s brace which saw Crawley lead 0-2 going into half time before the Reds were pegged back by Chesterfield when they scored two quickfire second half goals.
The Spireites are unbeaten in five league games after taking all three points at home to Gillingham on Tuesday night when they won 1-0 through a goal from Sheffield United loanee Sam Curtis.
Lindsey provided an injury update on both Arsenal loanee Louie Copley and Harry McKirdy. Copley “has rolled his ankle and it’s not right yet. It’s the same ankle as the first time, so it’s going to be two to four weeks”; and the latter has “a nerval problem in his back.”
Crawley midfielder Ronan Darcy was on loan at Chesterfield during the first half of the season. During his time with the Spireites he played 31 games and scored three goals.
Darcy is yet to score since his return to the Sussex side, but could he haunt Cook’s side on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds are in desperate need for points as they continue their fight for survival. Can they pick up all three points against playoff contenders Chesterfield tomorrow afternoon?
