Crawley Town manager Scott Lindsey named an unchanged starting XI following Tuesday night’s goalless draw away at Walsall.
The Reds began the match brightly, showing real attacking intent in the opening stages. Just over five minutes in, Danilo Orsi slipped Ronan Darcy in behind the Harrogate defence. The midfielder — affectionately dubbed the “White Pelé” by supporters — attempted to cut inside onto his right foot, but his effort was blocked and went out for a corner. The Darcy-Orsi partnership, which flourished during the 2023/24 season, continues to look dangerous since both players’ return to Crawley.
From the resulting corner, Harrogate initially scrambled the ball clear, but Crawley recycled possession well. Taylor Richards delivered a clever ball into the centre of the box, finding Darcy, whose curling strike flew narrowly wide of the post.
Harrogate’s first meaningful chance came moments later when Aiden Marsh fired over the crossbar, the ball landing on the roof of the net and briefly alarming Crawley goalkeeper Jacob Chapman. Bryn Morris then tried his luck from the halfway line after spotting Chapman off his line.
The visitors came closest to scoring on 18 minutes. A free-kick was floated to the back post where Cathal Heffernan made contact, and the ball fell kindly for loan striker Emile Acquah. His point-blank effort was superbly saved by Chapman to keep the scores level.
Crawley broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark through Max Anderson. Johnny Russell took a quick throw-in to Kellan Gordon, who drove forward before feeding Darcy. The midfielder cut inside, took a couple of touches, and unleashed a shot that was blocked by a teammate. Fortunately for the Reds, the ball dropped to Anderson, who controlled brilliantly before volleying home. The strike squirmed underneath Harrogate keeper Mark Oxley to make it 1–0.
Crawley nearly doubled their lead before the interval with some excellent play down the right. Gordon whipped a dangerous cross across the face of goal, but neither Orsi nor Russell could apply the finishing touch.
Unlike the first half, Crawley started the second period slowly and found themselves under pressure in the opening ten minutes. Harrogate’s best opportunity during this spell came from Heffernan, whose low drive from just inside the box was well saved by Chapman.
After weathering the storm, Crawley regained control at the Broadfield Stadium. Josh Flint surged forward on one of his trademark runs, exchanging a neat one-two with Russell before unleashing a powerful shot that was tipped away high to the right by substitute goalkeeper Henry Gray.
The ensuing corner proved decisive. On 66 minutes, Crawley doubled their advantage with a well-worked set-piece. Darcy lofted the ball to the back post where Flint rose to head home from close range, making it 2–0.
Chances were limited late on, though Crawley threatened to add a third. Lewis Richards’ cross was awkwardly cleared by Heffernan and almost turned into his own net. Orsi also tested Gray with a shot from the edge of the area ten minutes from time, but the keeper saved comfortably.
The match ended with Crawley securing three vital points and completing their first league double of the season, having already beaten Harrogate away earlier in the campaign.
Writer’s Man of the Match: Ronan Darcy (AM)
Darcy was a constant threat throughout, proving Crawley’s most creative outlet. He drove at defenders, linked up brilliantly with Orsi, and dictated play in midfield.
What Does This Result Mean for Crawley?
Crawley climb one place to 19th in the table following Barrow’s 3–1 defeat at Swindon, though Barrow still have two games in hand.
The Reds have also opened up a six-point gap over Newport County in 23rd after Newport’s 3–0 loss to Bristol Rovers.
